700 years as the Lanna capital

Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The Old City, surrounded by a moat and walls, has more than 30 temples. To the west is Nimmanhaemin, known for its cafés. To the east, by the river, is the Night Bazaar. It's smaller and more laid-back than Bangkok, and easy to explore on foot.

Our Korean manager in the city handles everything from airport pickups to emergencies. Use the tabs to read about flights, weather, money, festivals, getting around and where to stay.

Flights from Incheon to Chiang Mai

A nonstop flight takes about 6 hours. Chiang Mai Airport (CNX) is only about 3km from the city, so you can be at your hotel 15 minutes after landing.

  • 1Airlines and flight days change by season. There are more nonstop flights in high season (November–February) and fewer in the rainy season. When you book a package, we'll send you the flight schedule for your dates.
  • 2Many flights arrive at night. No need to worry: your driver tracks your flight number and will be waiting, however late you land.
  • 3Connecting flights work too. From Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang), there are dozens of domestic flights a day, so you get more choice of times.

Nonstop airlines: based on Chiang Mai International Airport routes (Wikipedia). We recheck flight operations at the time of booking.

When to go

Chiang Mai has three seasons: cool and dry, hot, and rainy. The same city feels very different depending on when you go.

NOV – FEB

Dry season: the best time to visit

15–20°C in the morning and evening, around 30°C during the day. Clear skies with almost no rain. Yi Peng (November), the Umbrella Festival (January) and the Flower Festival (February) all fall in this period, so hotels book up early.

MAR – APR

Hot season and haze

Daytime temperatures go above 35°C. From late February to April, some days are hazy (smoky season) because of farmland burning in the surrounding area. Bring a mask and plan some indoor activities. Songkran in mid-April is still worth the trip.

MAY – OCT

Rainy season: the green season

Expect a short afternoon shower. All-day rain is rare, and the rice fields and mountains are at their greenest. Flights and hotels are cheaper and it's less crowded. August and September are the wettest months.

  • 1Mornings in December and January are chilly. At Doi Inthanon or Mon Cham it drops below 10°C. Bring a light padded jacket.
  • 2Rainy season gear: keep it light. Showers are heavy but short, so a folding umbrella is enough. If you're riding a motorbike, a raincoat is easier.
  • 3In haze season (late February to April), check an air quality app. On days with poor air quality, we switch your plans to mostly indoor activities.

Money and payments

Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB). Notes are 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 THB. Coins are 1, 2, 5 and 10 THB. Exchange rates change daily, so your booking confirmation email shows a reference rate for that day.

What we recommendCash exchanged locally + a travel cardNo fee on card payments. Use cash for markets, songthaews and street stalls
Currency exchangeExchange booths in town have better ratesAt the airport, only change what you need right away
ATM withdrawals220 THB fee per withdrawalApplies to travel cards too, so take out more at once
Where you need cashSongthaews, markets, street stalls, temple donationsMost cafes, convenience stores and massage shops accept cards
  • 1Don't exchange all your won to baht in Korea. Change just a small amount. You'll get a better deal exchanging the rest at a local booth with KRW 50,000 notes or US dollars.
  • 2Pay with a Korean travel card such as Travel Wallet or Travelog. There's no fee on payments. ATM withdrawals still cost 220 THB, so withdraw as few times as possible.
  • 3Tipping isn't expected. 50–100 THB after a massage is common. No tip is needed for your pickup driver.
  • 4Typical cash prices. A songthaew ride in the city is 30–40 THB, a bowl of khao soi is 60–80 THB, and a one-hour Thai massage is 250–400 THB. These are typical ranges and may change.

ATM fees and card mix: based on Tripstore, Chiang Mai money exchange tips (Korean) and Card Gorilla 2026 Thailand payment guide (Korean). Individual prices are based on our local manager's experience and may change.
