The legend of the white elephant

According to legend, a Lanna king sent a relic of the Buddha on the back of a white elephant. The elephant climbed this mountain, called out three times and collapsed. The temple was built on that spot.

From the parking area, climb the stairs with naga (serpent deity) railings on both sides to reach the golden chedi. Further up the mountain are Bhubing Palace, a royal garden, and Doi Pui, a Hmong village.

Know before you go

A few things to keep in mind.

  • 1Shared songthaews (red shared trucks) leave from Chang Phuak Gate or in front of Chiang Mai Zoo. They leave once full. Reported fares vary, so always agree on the fare before you get in. For groups, a private car for the day is easier.
  • 2National park entrance fees apply from October 1, 2025. Foreign adults pay 100 baht and children 50 baht. It is collected at places such as Huay Kaew Waterfall, Doi Pui and the Pha Lat trail. Doi Suthep temple and Wat Pha Lat, reached by the main road, are exempt.
  • 3At temples and the palace, cover your shoulders and knees. Bhubing Palace is especially strict.
